Prediction markets think LeBron James will play this season and has a real chance of playing next season too. As of 22 October 2026, Kalshi gives about a 41% chance he announces his retirement before the 2027–28 season starts, down from 70% in June, before he chose the Philadelphia 76ers. A retirement before the 2028–29 season trades at about 76%, and before 2029–30 at about 91%.
At 41, LeBron begins a record 24th NBA season in a new city, on the smallest salary of his career. Here is what the markets say about how long it lasts, what his contract allows, and what is still on the line.

When the market opened in late May, LeBron was a free agent who had openly weighed retirement, and traders made it more likely than not that he would be done within a year: 60–70% through June. On 30 June he told the Lakers he would not return. On 24 July he announced he was joining the 76ers, and once the details emerged (two seasons, with an option on the second) the price fell into the low 40s, where it has stayed.
The market is not asking whether he retires at the end of this season in general; it asks whether he announces it before the first game of 2027–28, with the retirement effective by then. A decision that drags past opening night would resolve "No".
The odds behind the odds: retirement season by season
Kalshi's three contracts are cumulative: each later deadline includes the earlier ones. Splitting them up shows how traders see each summer:

| Value | |
|---|---|
| Before 2027–28 | 41% |
| Before 2028–29 | 76% |
| Before 2029–30 | 91% |
- Next summer: about 41% that he retires before 2027–28.
- If he plays on: the jump from 41% to 76% implies roughly a 59% chance he retires the summer after, given he played in 2027–28 ((76 − 41) ÷ (100 − 41)).
- Two years out: from 76% to 91% implies about 62% for the following summer, again conditional on playing.
In other words, traders make next summer slightly less likely than not to be his last, each summer after that more likely than not, and give him under a 10% chance of still playing in 2029–30, at 44.
The 76ers deal, explained
| Team | Philadelphia 76ers, his fourth NBA team after Cleveland, Miami and the Lakers |
| Length | Two seasons, with a player option on the second (2027–28) |
| Value | About $8 million in total (Spotrac lists $7.95 million guaranteed) |
| This season's salary | $3,876,529, the league minimum for a player with ten or more years of experience |
| Announced | 24 July 2026 |
The player option is the key to the retirement market. Next summer LeBron can pick it up and play a 25th season in Philadelphia, or decline it and retire (or sign elsewhere). Reports at the time said he described this as his last free-agency decision after seriously considering retirement, which is why traders put the chance of him walking away next year close to a coin flip rather than near certain.
Polymarket's summer markets got the shape of the deal right: its market on the size of his next contract resolved to under $4 million a season, and markets on a return to a former team and on playing alongside his son Bronny in 2026–27 both resolved "No".
What the markets got right this summer
LeBron's free agency was one of the most traded sports stories of the summer on Polymarket. Its markets settled like this:
| Polymarket market | Result |
|---|---|
| When will LeBron sign? | On or after 7 July (he signed on 24 July) |
| Will LeBron sign by 30 July? | Yes |
| How much will his next contract be (per season)? | Under $4 million |
| Will he sign with a former team? | No |
| Will LeBron and Bronny play together in 2026–27? | No |
Traders had the cheap, short deal priced well before it was announced: the "under $4 million" bracket became the favourite as reports of a minimum contract spread. That is the pattern with player moves, where news tends to leak through agents and reporters before it is official, and it is why player-transaction markets can move sharply on a single report.
What markets say about his 76ers season
The 76ers are among the contenders for the 2027 title:

| Value | |
|---|---|
| Oklahoma City Thunder | 22.5% |
| San Antonio Spurs | 19.5% |
| Philadelphia 76ers | 9.8% |
| New York Knicks | 7.5% |
| Minnesota Timberwolves | 6.2% |
| Boston Celtics | 5.5% |
Third favourites at roughly 10–11% makes the 76ers the strongest team in the Eastern Conference by these prices. A fifth ring at 42 would be a strong reason to retire on top, which is part of why the retirement market and the title market are linked: a deep playoff run could make either choice easier. More: NBA championship odds.
Kalshi's market on LeBron's team at the 12 February 2027 trade deadline gives Philadelphia 91%: traders do not expect a mid-season trade or a sudden retirement. Under its rules, that contract pays if he is still on the team he was on when the market opened.
LeBron's career in brief
| Drafted | 2003, first overall, by Cleveland |
| Teams | Cleveland (2003–10), Miami (2010–14), Cleveland (2014–18), Los Angeles Lakers (2018–26), Philadelphia (2026–) |
| Championships | Four: 2012 and 2013 (Miami), 2016 (Cleveland), 2020 (Lakers) |
| MVP awards | Four regular-season MVPs and four Finals MVPs |
| Scoring | The NBA's all-time leading scorer since February 2023, and the first player to reach 40,000 points (March 2024) |
| Family | Played alongside his son Bronny for the Lakers from 2024, the first father and son to share an NBA court |
Retirement talk is not new. After the Lakers lost the 2023 Western Conference finals he said publicly he had to think about whether to continue, and in June 2025 he picked up his final-year option with the Lakers rather than test free agency. What is new is the contract: a short, cheap deal with a player option is built for a player deciding one season at a time.
Records within reach
- 45,000 points. LeBron needs roughly 1,560 more regular-season points. At his recent scoring rates that would take most of a full season with few missed games, which is why Polymarket prices it at only 12%.
- Triple-doubles. Polymarket's market on six or more this season is a coin flip at about 51%.
- Longevity. Every game he plays extends records for seasons and longevity that may never be broken.
Life after basketball
LeBron has long said he wants to own an NBA team, and his name is often linked with a future Las Vegas franchise. Kalshi gives him only about 6% to be a majority owner of a team before 2030, a reminder that expansion, price and timing are all outside his control.
How to trade LeBron markets
- These markets are small. Kalshi's retirement market has traded only a few thousand dollars, so prices can sit several points from fair value and move on a single order. Use limit orders (limit vs market orders).
- Read the definition of "retire". An announcement before the season start, effective immediately or before the next season, is what counts. Hints in interviews do not.
- Think about time. Money in a market that resolves in November 2027 is locked up for a year; a small edge may not be worth it (expected value).
- Watch the option date. The player option decision next summer is the moment the 2027–28 market is likely to move most.
