Yes. Californians can legally use Polymarket through Polymarket US, the CFTC-regulated app, and trade sports, politics and economics contracts. The global site, polymarket.com, is closed to US residents. California has no legal sports betting, and its tribes have just won a round in court against Kalshi, so the state is one to watch. As of October 2026 the state had not taken Polymarket to court, and the tribes' headline case targets Kalshi.
As of 23 October 2026. Polymarket US checks your location; what the app shows is what you can trade where you are.
Polymarket in California at a glance
| Status in California | |
|---|---|
| Polymarket US | Available statewide, sports contracts included |
| Global polymarket.com | Not open to US residents |
| Minimum age | 18 |
| Online sportsbooks | Illegal; voters rejected Propositions 26 and 27 in 2022 |
| State tax on winnings | Taxed as ordinary income |
| Kalshi | Available, but blocked on the lands of three tribes suing it (Kalshi in California) |
Why Polymarket is allowed when sports betting is not
Californians have voted down sports betting, and gambling in the state is largely a tribal business. Polymarket US is not a sportsbook in law: it is a designated contract market regulated by the CFTC, and Polymarket argues that federal oversight of its contracts overrides state gambling law (is Polymarket legal in the US?). The state has not challenged that in court against Polymarket.
The tribal fight, and what it could mean for Polymarket
The case to watch is Blue Lake Rancheria v. Kalshi, brought by three tribes against Kalshi and Robinhood, not Polymarket. The tribes argue that sports contracts traded on their reservations are casino-style gaming barred by the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2025 | The tribes sue; a federal judge in San Francisco denies a preliminary injunction |
| 16 September 2026 | The Ninth Circuit finds the tribes likely to win on their gaming-law claim and sends the case back |
| Late September 2026 | Kalshi geofences the three tribes' lands |
Polymarket is not a party, and Polymarket US has not announced any block in California. But the reasoning is not specific to Kalshi: if the tribes win, any platform offering sports contracts on tribal land in California could face the same argument. California's attorney general, Rob Bonta, has also joined multistate filings backing states and tribes against Kalshi (Kalshi and the Supreme Court).
Newsom's order on insider trading
On 27 March 2026, Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order barring his appointees from using non-public information to trade on platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket, or to help relatives and business partners do so. It took effect immediately. It does not restrict ordinary users; it is aimed at officials with inside knowledge (insider trading on prediction markets).
What Californians can trade on Polymarket US
- Sports: NFL, NBA, MLB, college football and more, including combos (parlays explained).
- California politics: the governor's race (California governor odds) and the Los Angeles mayor's race, plus national midterm markets (2026 midterm predictions).
- Economics, tech and culture: Fed decisions, AI and IPO markets, awards and box office (Anthropic IPO odds).
The US app carries a subset of the global catalogue, so some markets quoted on polymarket.com are not tradable from California.

Can Californians use the global Polymarket site with a VPN?
No. The global site bars US persons and can freeze accounts it identifies as American. Use Polymarket US (where Polymarket is legal).
Risks to watch
- The tribal case returns to the district court; a broad ruling could push other platforms to block tribal land.
- The Supreme Court may settle whether states can regulate sports event contracts.
- State law: California has rejected sports betting at the ballot box; a future measure could address prediction markets directly.
