Because the global Polymarket site settles on a public blockchain, every trade and every position is visible. That makes Polymarket the one big prediction market where you can track the biggest traders, the "whales", and see what they buy. It does not make following them profitable.

This guide covers how to track whales with Polymarket's own pages, how to judge whether a big trader is any good, the problems with copy trading, and what the bots in these markets actually do.

How to track Polymarket whales

You do not need special software to start:

  1. The leaderboard ranks traders by profit and volume over a day, week, month and all time. How to read it without being fooled: Polymarket leaderboard.
  2. A market's "Top Holders" shows the biggest positions on each side of that market. A lopsided list on a thin market is worth noticing.
  3. A market's activity feed lists recent trades with size, price and the trader's profile, so you can spot large orders as they happen.
  4. Profiles show a wallet's open positions, past results and volume.

Third-party whale trackers and alert bots do the same thing automatically: they watch the blockchain and post large trades to a website, X or Telegram. They read the same public data, so they are useful for speed, not for secret information.

How to judge a whale

Size is not skill. Before paying attention to a wallet, check:

  • Record over many markets. One huge win on an election tells you little. Dozens of independent markets with consistent profit is more convincing.
  • Specialty. Some traders only win in one category, such as sports or a single country's politics.
  • Style. Is this someone who holds to resolution, or a market maker who trades hundreds of times a day for small edges and maker rebates? Market makers top the volume rankings while taking little directional risk.
  • Hedges elsewhere. A whale buying "Yes" here may hold the opposite position on Kalshi, or a different wallet. Their trade may not be a view at all.

The best-known whale story shows both sides: in 2024 a French trader using several accounts bet tens of millions of dollars on Donald Trump, reportedly after commissioning his own polling, and made a fortune. Thousands of people followed big pro-Trump wallets that year; many others followed big wallets on the other side and lost.

Polymarket copy trade: why it usually underperforms

Copy trading means buying whatever a chosen wallet buys. It sounds simple and has real problems:

  • You are always late. By the time you see the trade, the price has moved, often because the whale's own order moved it.
  • Slippage. Whales buy size; you buy after them at worse prices. See what slippage means.
  • You see entries, not reasons. A whale may exit quietly while you hold.
  • Selection bias. Today's top wallet is partly lucky. Leaderboards are full of last month's winners who give it back.
  • Decoys. Big traders know they are watched and can split orders across wallets.

If you follow whales at all, use them as a prompt to research a market, not as a signal to buy.

Polymarket bots: what they actually do

Most of the volume in fast markets comes from automated traders connected through Polymarket's API:

  • Market makers post buy and sell orders continuously and earn the spread.
  • Arbitrage bots buy an outcome on one venue and sell it on another when prices diverge: prediction market arbitrage.
  • Event bots react to data, such as crypto prices or sports scores, faster than people can.

Writing your own bot is possible with the public API: the Kalshi and Polymarket APIs.

Be careful with "Polymarket bot" offers. Telegram bots and copy-trading services that ask for your wallet's private key or seed phrase can take everything in it. No legitimate tool needs your seed phrase.

What about Kalshi?

Kalshi does not publish who holds what, so there is no Kalshi equivalent of a whale tracker. You see prices, volume and open interest, not traders. Comparing the two platforms: Kalshi vs Polymarket.

Polymarket whale tracker: frequently asked questions

Can you see who is betting on Polymarket?
On the global site, yes: trades and positions are public and tied to wallet addresses and profiles, which may use a username rather than a real name.

Is copy trading allowed on Polymarket?
Using public data to inform your own trades is allowed. Automated trading through the API is allowed within Polymarket's terms.

Do Polymarket whales have inside information?
Occasionally a trade looks suspiciously well timed, and regulators watch insider trading on regulated exchanges. Most whale trades are simply big bets, and many lose.

Is there a Polymarket copy trading bot?
Several third-party services exist. Never give any of them your private key or seed phrase.
